A lineup of Stone Brewing Company beer bottles

Stone Brewing Liberty Station – Brewery Review

If you only visit one brewery restaurant in San Diego, make it this one. Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens at Liberty Station is the most ambitious beer destination in the county: 40 taps, a 10-barrel pilot brewery, bocce courts, an outdoor cinema, and 30,000 square feet of gardens, all inside the former mess hall of the Naval Training Center. It opened in 2013 and it still feels like the future of what a brewery can be.

The basics

  • Brewery: Stone Brewing (Liberty Station location)
  • Address: 2816 Historic Decatur Road, #116, San Diego, CA 92106 (Point Loma)
  • Opened: May 2013
  • Known for: Big, bold West Coast IPAs and the gargoyle. Stone IPA, Arrogant Bastard Ale, and Ruination built the brewery’s reputation in the late 90s and 2000s and helped put San Diego on the craft beer map.

Stone was founded in 1996 in San Marcos by Greg Koch and Steve Wagner. Thirty years later it is one of the most recognized craft names in America. The Liberty Station outpost was an $8 million build that converted the Navy’s original mess hall and several surrounding historic buildings into a 55,000-square-foot complex seating around 700 people. The restoration won the 2013 People’s Choice Orchid from the San Diego Architectural Foundation.

One note on the current moment: the Stone brand changed hands in 2026, with Firestone Walker and Duvel Moortgat taking over brewing and the Southern California locations. The new owners have confirmed the Liberty Station restaurant stays open and keeps brewing on site. The Escondido flagship is a different story, with Koch and Wagner taking that building back independently.

The taproom

Calling this a taproom undersells it. The main dining room sits inside the old mess hall, all reclaimed wood, concrete, and glass, and then the whole thing spills outside into gardens with a koi pond, fire features, bocce courts, and a movie courtyard. It is the rare beer destination that works equally well for a serious tasting session and a family lunch.

The bar runs about 40 taps: Stone year-round beers, special releases, and guest taps from other breweries, plus a deep bottle list of roughly 80 to 100 craft and specialty beers. The 10-barrel pilot system on site means there are small-batch and one-off beers you will only find at Liberty Station, brewed under senior manager Kris Ketcham’s innovation program. There is also a Stone Company Store at the back for bottles, merch, and growler fills.

The kitchen deserves its own mention. Stone is the largest restaurant purchaser of small-farm organic produce in San Diego County, and much of it comes from the company’s own Stone Farms in Escondido. The menu leans world-inspired comfort food, and it is genuinely good, not an afterthought.

Practical notes: it is open daily from 11am (until 9pm Sunday through Thursday, 10pm Friday and Saturday). Parking is in the lots across Historic Decatur Road. Dogs are welcome in the outdoor areas.

Standout beers

  • Stone IPA: The flagship. The West Coast IPA that defined the style for a generation: piney, citrusy, bitter, and unapologetic.
  • Arrogant Bastard Ale: The strong ale with the famous attitude (“You’re not worthy”). Aggressive, malty, and still a rite of passage.
  • Stone Ruination IPA: The original bruiser double IPA, a 100+ IBU statement of intent from the early 2000s.
  • Stone Delicious IPA: The citrus-forward, gluten-reduced IPA that became a modern staple of the lineup.
  • Liberty Station pilot exclusives: The 10-barrel system turns out small batches and experiments, like the recent Grodziskie collaboration with local homebrewers, that never leave the building.

Our take

Stone Liberty Station is the complete package and the easiest brewery recommendation in San Diego. The beer list is deep, the pilot system keeps it interesting for repeat visits, the food is better than it needs to be, and the setting, a restored Navy mess hall wrapped in gardens, has no equal in the county. With the Escondido flagship in transition, this is now the essential Stone pilgrimage. Go hungry, bring the dog, and stay for a second round in the gardens.
