Bonito is Ballast Point’s answer to a simple question: what does a San Diego blonde ale taste like? The answer is golden, soft, and easy, with just enough hop character to remind you who brewed it. Inspired by the city’s permanently sunny days, it is the kind of beer that works at a barbecue, on a boat, or as a first pint for someone new to craft beer.

The basics

  • Brewery: Ballast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, CA)
  • Style: American Blonde Ale
  • ABV: 4.5%
  • IBU: 20

What to expect

Bonito pours clear and golden with a white head. The aroma is clean malt with a little bread and a hint of citrus. On the palate it is light and smooth: soft, bready malt sweetness up front, a subtle herbal and floral hop note in the middle, and a dry, crisp finish that invites another sip. At 4.5% and 20 IBU, nothing here is trying to overwhelm you, and that is the point.

Pair it with fish tacos, grilled chicken, or a light salad, or just drink it on its own on a warm afternoon. It is built for a second round.

Our rating

7/10

Rated by Alex (7). Alex puts this one at a 7, and we agree: Bonito does exactly what a blonde ale should do, and does it well. It is clean, refreshing, and genuinely drinkable, with enough malt character to keep it from tasting thin. It will not change your life, but it will not disappoint you either, and sometimes that is exactly the beer you want.
