Prekend is Eppig Brewing’s Kolsch-style ale, and the name is a wink at its job: a beer for the start of the weekend. Our notes listed it as a pre-Kellerbier lager at 5.2%, but BeerAdvocate lists it as a Kolsch at 4.9% ABV, and we are going with BeerAdvocate’s listing here. Either way, it is a light, crisp, German-inspired ale from a brewery that has made traditional styles its calling card.
The basics
- Brewery: Eppig Brewing (Vista, CA)
- Style: Kolsch
- ABV: 4.9%
- IBU: Not published
What to expect
Prekend pours bright and clear with a pale gold color and a white head. True to the Kolsch style, it is light and crisp, with soft pilsner malt up front and a subtle fruitiness from the ale yeast, plus a gentle hop bitterness that keeps it clean. The body is light, the carbonation is lively, and the finish is dry and refreshing. It is not a complicated beer, and that is the point: it is built for warm afternoons and easy drinking, traditionally served in a tall, narrow stange glass.
Our rating
6.0/10
Rated by Alex (6). Alex gave this one a 6, and we think that is a fair read. Prekend is a clean, well-made Kolsch that does exactly what the style asks: crisp, light, and refreshing. It does not stand out from the crowd of good Kolsch-style beers, but it is an easy, pleasant pour and a solid choice when you want something light without giving up flavor.
