Piper Down is Ballast Point’s Scottish ale, brewed for the brewery’s own bagpipe corps with a long three-hour boil and a malt-forward, low-hop character. The rye whiskey barrel version takes that base beer and ages it in charred American oak High West rye barrels, adding vanilla and wood tannins to the deep caramel and roasted barley underneath.
The basics
- Brewery: Ballast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, CA)
- Style: Scottish Ale (Rye Whiskey Barrel-Aged)
- ABV: 7.8%
- IBU: Not published for the barrel-aged version (base beer: 22)
What to expect
This version pours dark amber to brown, with a malt-driven aroma of caramel, toffee and roasted barley, plus vanilla and soft oak from the barrel. The rye whiskey adds a gentle spice that keeps the sweetness in check, and the finish is smooth, woody and warming without being hot.
It is a sipper, not a session beer. The base Scottish ale gives it a full, malty body, and the barrel gives it a second layer that rewards slow drinking. It suits a cool night, a fire, or dessert, and it is a good example of how barrel aging can add complexity without burying the beer underneath it.
Our rating
6.9/10
Rated by Nick (6.9). Nick’s score puts this firmly in good-but-not-great territory, and we agree. The barrel treatment is well judged and the malt base is solid, but the beer never quite reaches the heights of Ballast Point’s best barrel-aged work. A rewarding pour for Scottish ale and barrel-aged fans, and an easy recommendation within that niche.
