Victory at Sea is Ballast Point’s signature imperial porter, brewed with coffee and vanilla, and the High West barrel-aged version is the beer that turned a local favorite into a genuine special occasion pour. Aging the porter in High West bourbon and rye whiskey casks adds layers of caramel, oak and spice to an already rich base, and the result is one of the brewery’s most celebrated limited releases.
The basics
- Brewery: Ballast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, CA)
- Style: Imperial Porter (High West Barrel-Aged)
- ABV: 12%
- IBU: Not published
What to expect
This one pours nearly black with a short brown head. The nose leads with coffee and dark chocolate, followed by vanilla, brown sugar and a smooth bourbon warmth. On the palate the barrel character builds: soft caramel, smoky oak, a peppery rye spice and a touch of toasted almond over the roasty porter base. The coffee stays present throughout but never dominates, and the vanilla rounds off the edges.
Despite the 12% strength, the alcohol is remarkably well hidden for a beer this big, showing up mostly as a gentle warmth on the finish. The body is full but not syrupy, and the finish is long, with chocolate, bourbon and oak lingering together. This is a dessert beer in the best sense, and it rewards slow sipping.
Our rating
8.0/10
Rated by Nick (8). Nick rates this one highly, and we agree. The High West barrels elevate Victory at Sea without burying it: the coffee and vanilla still shine, the bourbon and rye add real complexity, and the whole thing drinks far more smoothly than its strength suggests. It is one of Ballast Point’s best barrel-aged achievements, and a bottle worth seeking out whenever it appears.
