Wahoo White, originally sold as Wahoo Wheat, is Ballast Point’s answer to the Belgian witbier: a light, cloudy, easy drinking wheat beer built for warm weather and long afternoons. It has been one of the brewery’s quiet work horses for years, the kind of beer that rarely steals headlines but always seems to be on tap when you want something refreshing.
The basics
- Brewery: Ballast Point Brewing Company (San Diego, CA)
- Style: Witbier (Wheat Beer)
- ABV: 4.5%
- IBU: 12
What to expect
Wahoo White pours pale gold and properly cloudy, thanks to unfiltered wheat and oats, with a soft white head. The aroma is citrusy and lightly spicy, with orange peel and coriander over a gentle wheaty malt base. On the palate it is light and smooth, with lemony citrus, a hint of peppery yeast character and just enough bitterness to keep it crisp.
This is not a beer that tries to be complicated. It is clean, refreshing and highly drinkable, with a dry finish that invites another sip. It pairs naturally with beach days, tacos and anything grilled, and it works well as a first beer of the evening or a lighter option alongside Ballast Point’s bigger hoppy releases.
Our rating
6.0/10
Rated by Alex (6). Alex lands Wahoo White right in the middle of the pack, and we think that is about right. It is well made, refreshing and true to style, but it does not have the depth or distinctiveness to stand out in a crowded field of wheat beers. A solid, dependable pour that we are happy to drink, even if it is not one we dream about afterward.
